Generic Host Process is a necessary Windows service for networking. Many applications use this for communication. It is not recommended to delete this file or deny it access to the internet. Usually it runs without problems, but recently, the problem with Generic Host Service for win32 occurs quite often due to virus and rootkit activities.

If you found this page, it is likely that you got an error message like “Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

The error message is followed by the countdown with the message: “This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM”

You also might get other symptoms of the problem:

The internet connection is halted while the icon for connection in the system tray is present

You got the error message about the netapi32.dll and svchost.exe problems

You got the error message about your PC recovery from the serious problem

These problems clearly indicate that there is problem with the svchost.exe system process possibly caused by the malware activity and this is the first of causes that need to be addressed. Not any antivirus will respond for the possible cause, and there is no any reliable way to easily determine is the problem caused by the malware or by some system problem such as faulty driver or a driver incompatible with the network software. So, there is only a one reliable way to catch the problem by chance while performing some trial sequences of different operations on your PC related to the problem.

The first one is running of a full scan on your system with advanced antivirus with up-to-date virus signature bases. It will not necessarily identify the possible problem, but the chance to fix the problem quick and to avoid other operations well worth it.

The known viruses that might cause the problem with Generic host process for win32 are quite advanced and include net-worm.win32.kido.ih, conficker, Heur.Worm.Generic, Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.idc, or Troj/IRCBot-XJ Trojan. You might have one of other numerous worms, viruses and Trojans that pretend to be a legal svchost.exe or use legal svchost.exe to run at windows startup.

There is no assurance that a new more advanced version of this malware wouldn’t find the way to fool antivirus software, and there is no guaranty that the antivirus that identified the problem will successfully remove it. If this is the case, than you might need a special removal utilities related to the virus version or to the problem with Generic Host Process for Win32 error. One of the advanced helpful tools for the removal of viruses end other malware is Combofix that is a free program.

There is a special solution Svchost Fix Wizard related to the Generic Host Process for win32 error that you can download here and use for fixing your system from the problems left after the virus removal, faulty drivers and other possible causes of the svchost.exe malfunctions.

Download Fix Wizard

The problem with Generic Host Process for win32 error might be related to failures not related to virus activities or related to the problems that weren’t resolved after the malware removal. Here you need to run tests on different system components, and try to fix it in the most reasonable way.

If the problem just happened, try to think what of your last moves might be the cause of the problem. If you install some new software uninstall it and test your system. It might also appear after you started your printer of scanner, and the problem is related to the possible automatic update incompatible with your software. Some DLL that uses svchost.exe to run crashed and caused a crash of the whole service. You installed update from Microsoft that contains faulty or incompatible driver. One of the known problem is some SP2 update package with a new version of svchost.exe that caused problems with old drivers. You might have an old printer or scanner drivers from Hewlett-Packard which are incompatible with the current version of svchost.exe

Try to resolve these problems with the System Restore to the most recent previous state saved. If it doesn’t help, try to start your system in Safe Mode and see if the error will disappear.
The problem might be caused by the network adaptors and their drivers. To test this one, Open Control Panel and click Device Manager and expand the branch Network Adaptors. The problem might be shown there and then you will need to download new drivers from the internet. You also can try to test your files for corruptions with CMD sfc/scannow. It will work with Windows Vista and 7. For the run on Windows XP you will need the installation CD.

You also can run msconfig – in the open window open Services tab and put mark the check box “hide all Microsoft services” Then press the button Deselect all services. If the problem resists, than it is not related to the service. If it is gone, then try to turn services on one by one in attempt to find out which one service causes the problem.

There might be other even more complex problems as well, and it is not possible to address all the possibilities in one article. Even more difficult to perform all the possible tests and procedures by hand, without any help in the process. The only way to avoid all this trouble or to get professional support in the most problematic cases is the use of the special software that is able to automate the process and condense it in a few clicks on the user side.

Download Fix Wizard

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security add-on to stop malicious applications. DEP helps to protect yours OS from buffer overflow error as buffer overrun is malware’s favorite technique.

If you receive the Data Execution Prevention error, it doesn’t always mean that there’s malware involved. Some other reasons like incompatibility can trigger DEP warnings. But sometimes it is really malware. So first of all, you should scan your PC with a good Anti-Virus.

If you switch to “essential program only” you might get rid of the error message. But it doesn’t solve the problem. Doing so is like curing the symptoms, not the illness.

You may also try go Control panel/ Performance and maintenance/ System/ Advanced/ Performance settings/ Data execution prevention.
Then set it to Default and see if that helps.

The research has shown that the Generic Host Process Data Execution Prevention error is frequently caused by the conflict between HP Software and you OS. If you have a HP Printer or scanner or any external device where you have the HP Software installed to support it. Most of the time this brings the problem in.

Follow the instructions.
Once the installation is finished, reboot your PC.

Step 2

Disabling Windows Aquisition
Now click on Start>Control Panel. Then double Click on Administrative Tools.
When the Administrative Tools Window is open, click the plus (+) sign in the left panel and then click on Services Icon.
In the right panel, scroll down until you find Windows Image Acquisition Icon and right-click on it.
Click Properties
In the drop-down list next to Startup Type, click Manual. Click OK.

Now go Start > Control Panel > Security Center.
In the opened window click Windows Firewall.
Click the Exceptions tab.
Now click on Add Program and then Browse.
Now go to My Computer > Local Disk > Program Files > HP > Digital Imaging > Bin
Click hpqtra08.exe and after click Open. Now click OK.
Restart the computer.

That can solve the Generic Host Process Data Execution Prevention error in case it is caused by HP software.

If the problem raised because of improper installation or an interrupted download or update, you can also take a data back up and try to repair your OS to solve the problem. You can make a clear install.

If all the above methods did not help to solve the problem, or you don’t have much time, you can always use a specialized tool to fix the error. Svchost Fix Wizard is a software that can fix all types of Generic Host Process error, for example Generic Host Process Data Execution Prevention error.
You may get this error if you have installed Microsoft Service Pack 2. Generic Host Process Win32 error is a complex problem which can occur for various reasons. The first 4 solutions that are presented here may or may not solve it. If you need a quick and simple solution proceed to Solution#5 right away.

Solution 1

1. The best way to start your fight with this error is to install and run a full scan with an Antivirus. If you already have an Antivirus you probably should install a new one because there is a possibility that it has been corrupted by malware.
If the full scan didn’t find any intruders, try to use solution

Solution 2

2. Install PC Tool Firewall Plus (www.pctools.com/firewall) and Microsoft patches KB924270 KB923414. That may also help to solve the Generic Host Process Win32 error problem.

Solution 3

3. To solve Generic Host Process for Win32 error you may also try to disable Server and WorkStation services. Go Start>Control Panel>Administration>Services and manually stop the work of these services. Click on them and choose startup type “Stopped”. After doing so you won’t be able to use some files and printers though.

Solution 4

4. To make use of this solution you will need to download some software.
Download – Windows Worms Doors Cleaner
– Winsock Fix
– Windows Update Patch KB894391
– Windows Update Patch KB921883
You can easily find these files if you type their names in Google.
Start solving the problem by double-clicking the first file wwdc.exe to open the program Windows Worms Doors Cleaner, then click the following buttons:
The key to disable DCOM RPC (port135)
Disable Locator to close the PRC Locator (port 445)
Ports135 and 445 are the most vulnerable in Windows System. Malicious software often uses them to penetrate your PC.
When the ports 135 and 445 are disabled, close Windows Worms Dooes Cleaner program and restart your PC.
Then double-click the files WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU.exe and WindowsXP-KB921883-x86-ENU.exe respectively, and install them following the installation instructions.
After that double-click the file WinsockxpFix.exe to fix winsock problem, when the program opens click Fix and wave your Generic Host Process for Win32 error goodbye.
If the Generic Host Process Win32 error didn’t leave you after this, well, there are more solutions.

Solution 5

5. If the previous solutions are way too complex or weren’t effective, there is also a garanteed way to solve the problem –

Svchost.exe Fix Wizard from SecurityStronghold. Install the program and it will do the job for you easily and quickly.

In this article we will briefly explain you the nature of this problem and give you a few ideas about how to solve it.

Introduction to svchost.exe CPU (or memory) usage problem

There are two main reasons that may cause svchost.exe memory problem: spyware activity and Windows automatic update malfunctioning. Svchost.exe is an absolute favorite for different malicious programs to target as it doesn’t look suspicious, so it won’t easily be detected. Corruption of svchost.exe file may cause an extremely slow startup, computer crash during windows update, it may also be the reason why your computer stops responding for periods between 5-30 minutes. To make sure that you do have svchost.exe high memory problem you need to press CTRL+ALT+DEL all at the same time. When the Task Manager opens, go to the “Processes Tab” and press “Memory Usage”. If you have svchost.exe high memory and CPU usage problem you will see that the amount of memory usage svchost.exe uses will keep increasing until CPU becomes 99 or 100%.

Solutions

There are several solutions to this problem. Let’s review some of them:

A

First of all you should update your PC by downloading all the latest updates from Windows web site.

1. Download all the files from the website and save them to your C:\ drive
2. Restart your PC in safe mode. To do this, press F8 just before you see the Windows XP logo and choose “Safe Mode”
3. Log on as “Administrator”.
4. Go Start > Run, click the Browse button and find the files you saved before, press Open, then OK.
You may also disable the process which takes most of CPU:

1. Download the Process Explorer tool from Microsoft.
2. After you download it, run the exe file. Now point your mouse at the svchost process and you’ll see which service is running under that process.
3. Now find SVCHOST high CPU usage process
4. If the process is not a Windows process then simply kill the process and uninstall the program.
5. If it is a Windows process you can disable it by right-clicking on it from the Services tab>Properties and choosing Disabled from the Startup type.

B

If the first solution didn’t work, you can go on to the plan “B” and check your PC for viruses. It is strongly recommended that you reinstall your Antivirus before running a full scan to make sure it hasn’t been corrupted by malicious programs.

C

There are some other solutions to this problem. You may try them at your own risk. But if you are not sure what you are doing, the best way for you is to download an automatic tool (for example Svhost Fix Wizard by Stronghold) that will do all the work for you.

We have chosen some useful videos that show some ways of solving Generic Host Process error.

The first thing you need to do is press Start>Run and type in ‘regedit’. Click OK.

Now you should go to directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then click on folder System, then CurrentControlSet.

Now scroll down until you find NetTB folder, click on it, and choose Parameters.

Now in the right window find “TransportBindNameX” at the end of right side window. Double click this value and delete the data titled \Device\ to leave it blank.

Now you should go to Start>Control Panel>Administrative tools>Services and double-click on it.

Now find auxiliary NetBIOS ICP/IP and click right mouse button to see its properties, change StartUp type to “automatic” and apply it.

Another way to get rid of the problem (in case you have SP2) open the link on the Microsoft portal then download and install Security Update.

First you go Start>Run and type in ‘cmd’ without the brakes in the opened window. Now you can see a command prompt. Now type in ‘netsh’ and press Enter. Now type ‘winsock’ and press Enter again. Now type ‘reset’, press Enter and restart your computer.

The video shows several ways of solving the problem that include downloading specialized tools and patches.

                                   Way#1
Create some bat.files: The first one fixes vulnerabilities in registries, the second fixes reset winsock, to run the third runs protection scan that would replace corrupted files. (to run this one you will need Windows XP disk).

to create the first one you just need to open Notepad and type in the following:

As you start your computer or do your normal work you get a svchost.exe application error saying something like “The instruction at “0x7c918fea” referenced memory at “0×00000010″. The required data wasn’t placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0×000000009″. Click on OK to terminate the program. Click on cancel to debug. ” As you may see, both of the buttons do not solve the problem. Even if you restart PC in safe mode, the message will still pop up. But don’t panic! This article will help you to get rid of the problem in a blink of an eye.

Svchost.exe application error may appear due to a lot of various reasons, but there are two most popular reasons:

Virus activity and system damage

A corrupted Windows Update in Windows XP

This particular .exe application is often an easy target for virus programs. So first thing you need to do is to run a full virus scan on your PC. You can also check if there is any virus activity by looking at how much of your PC’s CPU is being used by svchost.exe file at the moment. (in XP, use Alt, Ctrl & Del buttons together to bring up the Task Manager, and check in the “Processes” window).

If the viruses haven’t caused the svchost.exe application error, follow these steps:

Go to Start > Run (or click Microsoft and “R” buttons at the same time) and then type “services.msc” in the opened window, click OK.

Find the Automatic Updates service and double-click on it. Make sure the Log On tab is selected as default.

Uncheck the option “Allow service to interact with desktop” Then go to the Hardware Profile section (under the Log On tab) and enable this service.

Find the General tab and check if the start-up type is set to Automatic. If it’s not, select Automatic.

Now go to the Service Status section. Enable this service by clicking Start. Repeat these operations for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

Go to Start > Run. Type “cmd” and click OK.

Type in REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and hit Enter.

After you see the message “DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded” click OK.

Now do the same with the following commands:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL

REGSVR32 ATL.DLL

REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL

REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL

REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Now go to Start>Run again and type “net stop WuAuServ” then press Enter

Then type “cd %windir%” and hit Enter.

Now type in: ren SoftwareDistribution SD_OLD. After that type in “net start WuAuServ“. To close the window type in “exit” and hit Enter. Now restart your PC. When you finish, you shouldn’t have this issue any more.

“Generic Host Process For Win32 Services Encountered A Problem and needs to close” is a rather common error message of Windows XP. But you don’t have to worry because there are many ways to easily solve this type of error. This article will explain you how to fix Generic Host Process Error once it has occurred on your computer.

Generic Host Process Error or Svchost Error may occur due to different reasons – attacks of computer hackers, viruses or computer hardware.

Download Fix Wizard

There are two ways of solving the problem:

You can:

Download and install a special software

Try to solve the problem independently

The reasons for Generic Host Process Error may be different, so you may have to try all the ways described below:

First we need to make sure that the error wasn’t caused by malware. Use an antivirus with full updates to scan your computer for viruses.

It may also be useful to close the ports 445 and 135 to stop computer hackers from penetrating your system.

To close Port 445 you need to:

Go to “Run” (click buttons “Microsoft” and “R” simultaneously) and type “regedit” in the opened window.
Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/NetBT/Parameters

Double click “TransportBindName” and delete the default value.

To close Port 135 you need to go to “Run” (click buttons “Microsoft” and “R” simultaneously) and type “regedit” in the opened window. Then go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/OLE

Find a string value called: EnableDCOM and set the value to: N (now it’s Y)

- Then close the Registry Editor. Shutdown and restart your computer.

3. If it didn’t help, try following these steps:

#1

1. Go to “Run” and type “regedit” in the opened window. Then go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > Browser > Parameters”

2. Find “IsDomainMaster“and set data: “False”

3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole and find “EnableDCOM” that will have value “Y”. Double-click on it and change it to “N”

4. Then restart your PC and if it didn’t work,

#2

1. Go to “Run” and open “cmd”

2. Then type “netsh” and press enter, type “winsock” and press enter and type “reset”.

3. After you have done all these, restart your PC

If the problem still hasn’t been solved, you can install a tool that will help you to solve the Generic Host Process Error.

4. There are different tools that deal with the problem, i.e.:
